DEBUNKING THE MYTH OF THE EASY AFC EAST

In an age of parity in the NFL the Patriots' overall win percentage is absurd to the point of being almost unbelievable. To put this in perspective, there are only 4 other coaches with a winning percentage over .700 (Guy Chamberlin, John Madden, Vince Lombardi and George Allen). These 4 coaches are a combined 244 games over .500, whereas Belichick's Patriots are 157 games over .500 (as of this blog post).

It's been argued that the Patriots great win percentage is a product of happenstance; a mix of good luck and bad opponents. That if they didn't play in the AFC East, things would look a lot different. Luckily, we here at the PatriotsDynasty site have those statistics, so let's dive in -- starting with the Patriots win percentage against the entire NFL.

NFL
263 - 90
0.745

That's a pretty staggering win percentage. As stated earlier, a common argument is that the Patriots would struggle if they were in the NFC instead of the "easier" AFC, but the statistics prove otherwise. Here's the breakdown of the two conferences.

AFC
198 - 68
0.744
NFC
65 - 22
0.747

As we can see, it's a pretty even split, regardless of the disparity in games.

Another popular argument against the Patriots dominance is that they benefit from "six free wins a season" by playing in a weak division. In fact, the AFC East has been just as competitive against New England as any other division, if not more so.

Here's the splits on the AFC divisions.

AFC North
34 - 12
0.739
AFC South
41 - 10
0.804
AFC East
90 - 30
0.750
AFC West
33 - 16
0.673

As we can see, the AFC East actually performs on par with the rest of the divisions (and is pretty close to the NFL average as well). And it's not as if the Patriots only beat up on teams they know. Each of the NFC divisions have met similar results as their AFC counterparts.

Here's the NFC divisional numbers.

NFC North
17 - 6
0.739
NFC South
17 - 5
0.773
NFC East
16 - 6
0.727
NFC West
15 - 5
0.750

So it's not like the Patriots only beat up on certain bad teams (although the Buffalo Bills might argue with this). The fact of the matter is this: the Patriots beat up on everyone, which is why they currently do not have a losing record against any team in the NFL since the 2000 season.

Absolutely mind-blowing.
