Game Recap

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Tom Brady on the opening night of the 2015 NFL season in a Patriots 28-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the first possession of the game, the Steelers marched 54 yards to the Patriots 26, but Josh Scobee missed a 44-yard field goal attempt. After the next two drives ended in punts, the Patriots marched 90 yards in over seven minutes with Brady capping off the drive by finding Rob Gronkowski on a 16-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 Patriots lead. The Steelers responded by driving all the way to the Patriots 28, but once again, Scobee missed the field goal attempt. The Patriots took advantage, marching 64 yards in 9 plays and Brady found Gronkowski once again, this time on a 6-yard touchdown pass, and the Patriots led 14-0. The Steelers finally responded by driving 58 yards in just under four minutes, and Scobee nailed a 44-yard field goal, and the Patriots led 14-3 at halftime. The Patriots offense continued with their first half pace, producing a second half opening drive of nine plays, 80-yards, finishing with Brady throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to new acquisition, tight end Scott Chandler and the Patriots led 21-3. The Steelers countered with a 80-yard, 7 play drive, with Will Johnson scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run, and Ben Roethlisberger converting the two-point conversion on a pass to Markus Wheaton, trimming the deficit to 21-11. After a Patriots three-and-out, the Steelers marched 67 yards to the Patriots 1, but a penalty pushed them back to the 5 and DeAngelo Williams was stuffed for a loss, but Scobee converted the 24-yard field goal to make the score 21-14. On the first play of the following Patriots drive, Brady connected with Gronkowski on a 52-yard pass to put the Patriots at the Steeler 27-yard line. The Patriots finished the drive six plays later, with Gronkowski catching his third and final touchdown pass of the night from a yard out, extending the Patriots lead to 28-14. The two teams exchanged punts, and then Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was intercepted at the Patriots 7 on a pass intended for wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey by safety Duron Harmon, giving the ball back to the Patriots with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Patriots punted, and the Steelers marched 70 yards and scored a touchdown pass to Antonio Brown on an 11-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left on the game clock. Gronkowski ended his superb night by falling on the subsequent Steelers onside kick attempt, ending the game.
