Game Recap

The matchup began with a coin toss in which the Miami Dolphins won and elected to kick. The Patriots marched 75 yards in 7:32, managing to score on a pass from Tom Brady to Martellus Bennett for a 7-0 lead. After a Dolphins three-and-out the Patriots received the ball with great field position at the Dolphins' 45. Five plays later, Michael Floyd managed to get into the endzone while fighting through 4 defenders. This was his first touchdown as a Patriot. On the next Dolphins' possession, Matt Moore was intercepted by Logan Ryan. Beginning at their own 44 yard line, the Patriots managed to reach the Dolphins' 22. However, this time they weren't able to score a touchdown but settled for a 40-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal, extending the lead to 17-0 on the first play of the second quarter. Once again, the Dolphins offense remained lifeless as they punted. Despite being pinned at their own 10, the Patriots managed to score another field goal traveling 82 yards on 14 plays with Gostkowski's 26-yard field goal increasing the lead to 20–0. The Dolphins finally answered on their next drive, marching 75 yards on 10 plays with Jarvis Landry scoring on a pass in which he was knocked back by Dont'a Hightower but still managed to get into the endzone. On the very next drive, the Patriots drove to the Dolphins 34, but Gostkowski's 52-yard attempt was wide-right and the score was 20-7 at half time.

The Dolphins marched 75 yards in over 6 minutes with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Kenny Stills trimning the deficit to just 20-14. On the third-and-7 from the Patriots 23, Brady connected with Edelman for a touchdown on a 77-yard catch-and-run, widening the lead to 27-14. Each of the team 's next two possessions ended in punts, but these would be the last points the Dolphins would be able to get. On the third play of this drive, Julian Edelman managed to score a 77-yard touchdown pass. The next 4 drives for both teams combined all ended in punts. The Dolphins managed to reach the Patriots 9, however, on a 2nd and goal, the Dolphins nearly reached the endzone but Damien Williams fumbled after Devin McCourty punched it out and linebacker Shea McClellin recovering the ball and returned it 69 yards to the Dolphins 18. Six plays later, LeGarrette Blount scored on a 1-yard run. Brady completed the two point conversion with a pass to Edelman for the 35-14 final.

With this victory over the Miami Dolphins, the Patriots clinch home field advantage throughout the entire AFC playoffs. They also finished with a record of 14–2 for the first time since 2010. Julian Edelman had a huge day against the Dolphins as he had 151 yards of receiving in 9 receptions, 6 rushing yards, and 1 receiving touchdown.
