Game Recap

No matter who you asked, the preseason prognostications for the Patriots and the Jets were on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. The Patriots entered the season as the Vegas favorites for a Super Bowl repeat (+300 moneyline) while the Jets were tagged with the longest Super Bowl odds (+3500 moneyline). Some NFL analysts were even throwing around the idea of a 16-0 season for the Patriots and/or an 0-16 season for the Jets. But through the first five weeks of the season the analysts could not have been more wrong as the teams entered their week 6 matchup tied atop the AFC East, both with records of 3-2.

The Jets showed that their early season success was no fluke as they jumped out to an early 14-0 lead as Josh McCown lead touchdown drives in 2 of the Jets first 3 possessions. The situation seemed rather grim but at the end of the day it was still the Jets vs the Patriots. And it was still Josh McCown vs Tom Brady. Brady responded by engineering a 9 play 93 yard drive that was capped off by a Dion Lewis 1yd TD run. Later in the half Brady converted a Malcolm Butler INT into a (patent pending) New England Patriots halftime 2:00 drill Rob Gronkowski TD.

And, as is tradition, the Patriots received the 2nd half kickoff and promptly marched 75 yards to take the lead on a Brady 33 yard TD pass to Gronkowski. Remember folks, this is still the Patriots vs the Jets. A McCourty INT and subsequent FG stretched the lead to 10, but to New York’s credit they hung in the game. Early in the 4th quarter they scored what appeared to be a TD to draw back within 3 points. But the officials reviewed the play and overturned the TD, ruling that Malcolm Butler caused a fumble as Austin Seferian-Jenkins crossed the goal line, resulting in a touchback for the Patriots. It was at this exact moment that the NFL fans in r/nfl collectively lost their minds.

The Jets briefly threatened on their last possession but ultimately fell short as the Patriots took sole possession of first place in the AFC East. It was a game steeped in controversy but nonetheless Brady finished the game as the NFL all time leader in regular season wins by a QB (187) breaking a tie with Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. It is a record Brady would break 9 more times that season.
